Sega Nomad: Screen Fix + CD Audio & Master System Mods

Factory bodge wire no longer attached to the nearby capacitor, so I fixed that first. Tried it again, the issues remained.

Great! 😅 Someone installed an aftermarket screen, held it in place with hot snot and electrically insulated it with napkin... 🤡 Replaced that with kapton tape but no solution for screen placement yet.

So, whomever did this, thought this was OK... 🤡 Binned this one, cleaned up the area and put in a new one. Meanwhile most of the shit wire work for the screen broke off due to shit joints.

Fixed the shitty joints and voilà, screen is of dodgy smeary quality but, the picture is now stable and the sound plays fine. It's good to end a long day of console tinkering with a minor win.

As it turns out, I'm a sucker for pain so I went back in, while the #Sega Nomad was open, just to replace the electrolytic caps. Found something interesting... The reason why the console would sometimes cut out. 🤡 abound 😂 #RETROGAMING #SegaGenesis #SegaNomad #MegaDrive

When inspecting the capacitors in question, I found that both had 1 leg that could be wiggled freely inside the through hole... 🤣They both a round glob of solder on said leg that wasn't really welded to the hole. You can see near the red wire the joint is non-existent.

Put in new caps, cleaned up the solder on nearby components and the power jack too.

Last but not least, some test play with #Castlevania Bloodlines and outputting to my Sony PVM.

Quick check using Hang-On for Master System and an MSU enhanced ROM of #BareKnuckle II (aka Streets of Rage 2). I really like this one the audio CD sound track is killer.

Quite possibly the last handheld display stand by @PointerFunction that I'll add to my collection. While one can never say never, I think I'm happy with my current handheld lineup. #SegaNomad #Sega #RETROGAMING

(1/2) I decided to tackle my Nomad, thinking I was just doing preventative work and had addressed the evil within previously... I was wrong. Started removing caps with soldering iron and immediately noticed the smell. Went full @A3rgan with the twist method. #RETROGAMING #Sega

(2/2) All caps came out easily, no pad damage. Here you can see the corpses of the fallen electrolytics, felled by age. Finished up by testing with some #Castlevania. As always it's my go to game. #RETROGAMING #MegaDrive #SegaGenesis #repair #restoration

1/2 Got a package in the mail today from the one and only @PointerFunction. A Nomad battery pack. It's lovely and very well made. More pics in the next post with additional details. #Sega #Nomad

2/2 it lights up on the inside and it even can be used to play without cells. I need to order myself some 18650 cells but this means I can at least, for now, play using a USB power source.
