Panasonic FZ-1 3DO: Recap & ODE (2nd, Laser Donor)

This is the Panasonic FZ-1 3DO whose laser went to save its sibling. With the drive dead anyway, a full recap and an ODE installation was the logical conclusion.

As a weekend project I built myself two of these mini 3DO ODEs by @TZMWXdiyer, 1 for each of the 3DOs I own. #RETROGAMING #3DO

@TZMWXdiyer if you don't mind, I have three questions about the board. 1. The through-hole caps are listed as 220-470uF. Does this mean one of each or is any value in that range ok? 2. Where can I get the UF2 file? 3. Do I need a USB A plug or can I use an adapter from RPi port.

Today I finally got to test @TZMWXdiyer's 3DO ODE for the Panasonic FZ-1. It seems like both my boards are working. 😄 So here, have some pic of it and some shots of some games I tried out. #RETROGAMING #3DO

Obligatory shot of #DOOM for it's anniversary. Also featured, Gex, Street fighter II turbo and The need for speed. #StreetFighter #RETROGAMING #3DO #DOOM30 #doom30th

And now in their final form, with an integrated USB-A port.

(1/3) Smelling the fishy smells today. I had put this off far too long. The Panasonic 3DO FZ-1 really is something to recap sight unseen. This console actually worked but just look at the state of those through holes before and after rework. #RETROGAMING #3DO #restoration #repair

(2/3) Mainboard recapped, reflowed lots of dull joints, overall cleaning and on to testing with some Puzzle Bobble. This kind of console makes me really regret not having bought a bigger ultrasonic cleaner. It's a pain to clean these by hand, moreso when caps have leaked.

(3/3) Also recapped the disc drive PCB, replaced the tray belt and the broken gear on the shaft that moves the laser assembly. This was purely for preservation purposes as the laser of this drive was put onto a different unit and I left a non-working one in its place.

Another day, another 3DO. This one's drive is dead and since the laser's are unobtanium. And ODE was its saving grace. Even better now that it can be accessed externally. #3DO #RETROGAMING

Crap, should have proofread instead of trusting the keyboard. Oh well... Can't edit so, won't delete.
