Nintendo Game Boy Color: No Video, Two RetroSix IPS Kits

Two pixel-effect IPS kits, bought from RetroSix in October 2021 to upgrade the clear smoke Game Boy Color, both arrived unable to display video. Support's suggestion was to buy a second kit to test, and when that one failed too the answer was that there was no way two kits could be broken. A friend's unmodded Game Boy Color, recapped along the way, ruled the console out. The first kit turned out to have an LCD flex connector that was never properly soldered to its pads, and touching up those joints made it run reliably, which in turn proved the second kit's display was good and its PCB was not. The findings went back to RetroSix and got no reply.

When I modded that yellow-shelled GBC to an IPS kit with pixel effects I wanted to update my own unit to the same kit. Which I purchased from Retrosix at the time (2021), turns out, I was in for a sad and expensive journey, as the kit didn't work on arrival. #retrogaming #GBC

I reached to Retrosix via their Discord and their solution was: "buy a second kit to test". Which I did and I even asked a friend for his non-modded unit, to test the screens on his GBC and none of the kits worked.

So now I was out of pocket quite some dime and stuck with 2 non-working kits and being blamed for it because: "there's no way 2 kits are broken, we test all of them".

I even recapped my friend's GBC and tested again, to no avail.

This is what I was stuck with, the first kit, would sometimes display video but most of the time, it wouldn't. The second never displayed video at all.

I eventually figured out the problem with the first kit. The LCD flex connector was not properly soldered so it didn't make proper contact with the pads.

After touching up the solder I finally got it to work reliably. Then, I used this board to prove the second display worked. However, the second PCB did not, and it was not an issue with the same connector. I went back to Retrosix with these findings and all I got was crickets...
