Taking a heavily rusted original Microsoft Xbox back to glory: full recap, optical drive belt replacement, metal parts soaked in a vinegar bath for days, Dremel-sanded clean, then finished with matte galvanizing paint to stop the rust returning. Later softmodded with Rocky5's Xbox Softmodding Tool.
In 2020 I purchased an OG Xbox on eBay, which looked quite alright, or so I thought... I opened it up and then saw the mess on the second picture. I wondered what the hell had happened to it. Then I got to work on restoring it. #retrogaming #xbox
This was during lockdown so I everybody was mostly stuck at home, I hadn't yet learned of Evaporust. I bought several liters of vinegar to be delivered at home through a delivery service. I dunked everything in it to try and remove all the rust.
This was the outcome. Not bad for a start I think. Moving on to the next stage.
I sanded everything down with a rotary tool, went through quite a few tips to try and get everything to look shiny and remove all the rusted bits. After sanding it was looking quite alright.
Then I finished it off with some matte galvanizing paint to prevent rust from returning. Gave it a couple of layers and sanded it out by hand to try and get it somewhat smooth.
Finally I put everything back, by this point I had already fully recapped the Xbox so all it needed was to be put back together and put back to use.
I subsequently proceeded to softmod it with Rocky5, as you do, and then I tried out some classics. Xbox emulation is quite alright.
