Friend asked me to pick up a Sega Dreamcast VA0 from Japan and make it new again. Full recap, fan and optical drive lubrication, GDEMU install with the required VA0 resistor array mod (5V to 3.3V for GDEMU) and a dummy load resistor for the 12V PSU rail. Also fitted a resettable fuse and a fresh ML2032 clock battery.

Refurbishing that VA0 Dreamcast. New capacitors on the motherboard, GD-ROM PCB and controller PCB, also replacing the fuse with a resetable one. Cleaning and lubricating the optical drive mechanism. #Dreamcast

Lubricating fan, replacing battery and testing. Testing and sadly the drive still doesn't work but it's not a major issue as it's meant to be replaced by a GDEMU anyway. #RetroGaming

Modded the Japanese VA0 Dreamcast for GDEmu compatibility and added the janky resistor dummy load to the GDEmu while my friend decides on what to do about the power supply situation (100V PSU on European grid). #Dreamcast #Sega

It's working. Now let's do a burn-in test with Sonic Adventure. #Sega #RETROGAMING #Dreamcast #SONIC #SonicTheHedgehog

Taking care of a slightly yellowed and rusted Dreamcast arcade stick. #Sega #dreamcast #RETROGAMING

Disassembled everything. Dipped plates, stick and screws into evaporust.

Washed the shell and ran a pencil eraser through it to remove stuff that wasn't coming out. Lubricated the stick and cleaned all the buttons. Put it back together and it's looking much better. Surprisingly, the rubber even removed some of the yellowing.

And with the PSU now recapped we have reached the end of this Dreamcast's journey at my hands. It's ready for its new owner. Ran the 240p test suite to test input on all controllers and then played a couple of rounds of Street Fighter Alpha 3. #Dreamcast #Sega #StreetFighter

The final details before the sendoff. Wipe with isopropyl and then application of some 303 protectant. #RETROGAMING #Sega #Dreamcast #MasterSystem

And there we go, righting the final wrong. I don't like using radial caps in SMD applications but I couldn't get stock of bi-polar ones at the time. Now I have them, so I fixed that real quick. #RETROGAMING #Sega #Dreamcast
