Fujitsu FM Towns Marty Full Recap (Floppy Pending)

Thorough recap from top to bottom on this Fujitsu FM Towns Marty. The console boots and the CD-ROM side works, but the floppy drive remains undefeated. It spins but refuses to acknowledge any disk.

Today I decided to tackle the Marty. If you like a restoration thread, follow along. 🧵👇 #retrogaming #TOWNS #Marty

I started with the FDD and predictably, there were melted bits of the belt everywhere. I don't have a belt on hand, so I recapped the PCB, removed all the gunk, lubricated the motor shaft and cleaned the head. I'll circle back when the belt arrives.

Next I tackled the CD-ROM drive by recapping the PCB, cleaning and lubricating the relevant bits and also the laser lens.

4 / 8

Afterwards, I recapped the main board where a lot of capacitors let off the fishy smell on the way out. Cleaned up with vinegar and isopropyl before replacing the capacitors, obviously.

Finally I tackled the PSU, alas, I did not have all the necessary values on hand but I had most of them. The ones labelled with X are marked for death in the near future. After I place a parts order.

This was a long day... Especially since something went wrong with my desoldering station early on.

Fortunately, the effort paid off. The beast lives!

Bonus videos for those of you curious to see an FM Towns Marty at work. There's menu music and animation and Puyo Puyo music for your delight.

There we go, the caps I was missing for the PSU have arrived and we're installed. Now I'm just waiting for a new belt for the FDD drive to see if I'm lucky or not. #retrogaming #TOWNS #Marty #PuyoPuyo

Got a belt for the Marty but sadly the drive doesn't seem to recognise disks. I can hear it spinning but no drive activity light and the system says there is no floppy inserted. You can hear it spin in the video. #retrogaming #TOWNS #Marty
