Microsoft Xbox 360 E: Recap, Reflow, HDD & Clean

The Microsoft Xbox 360 E's PSU was packed with bargain-bin caps and the board had clearly had something spilled on it. A recap, a reflow, a fresh HDD and some elbow grease on the shell later, it's a much happier machine.

Newest addition to the stable, joining my 360 S. Assuming I didn't screw up the vetting process, this should be a Corona, so it should be eligible for RGH. Disappointing power brick, full of taicon and ltec capacitors. I'll be replacing these with the good stuff. #gaming #Xbox360

Out with the Taycon, Ltec and Samxon capacitors. In with the new Nichicon ones. Also, out with the various bug carcasses, dead flies and dust bunnies. There were a lot more bugs than in the photos, the PSU rattled... 😅 Well, not anymore. After cleaning, on to testing! #Xbox

After cleaning and assembling, everything is in order. No more rattling PSU, no more crappy capacitors in the PSU and everything works. The PSU fan is breathing so much better, I need to put my ear very close to it to hear it blow. #gaming #restoration #Xbox360

The Xbox 360 E I bought recently had no hard drive, so I bought a cheap one off of eBay. The drive arrived today and turns out, it works fine! Moved around some data from the onboard 4GB storage to the HDD and it was pretty quick. £10 well spent. #Xbox360 ☺️

1/5 I decided to take a look at the Xbox 360 E that I purchased last year and give it some TLC. So I cracked it open and found out that although it works it looks like someone spilled something on it. #restoration #Xbox #Xbox360

2/5 Some rust on the shields. I just applied some evaporust but I'm not looking to deal with this just now.

3 / 5

3/5 Fluxed up the board and went to town on it with the iron, to remove the oxidation from the solder joints. Then cleaned both sides with isopropyl alcohol. Applied some fresh Kryonaut thermal paste.

4/5 Then I turned my attention to the scratched up outside it was pretty gnarly

5 / 5

5/5 I used a cutting disc and a polishing disc but I didn't have cutting and polishing compound here, all I had was PlastX. Then I applied some 303 aerospace protectant. It's not perfect but I think it looks much nicer than before.
