This rev 3-4 AES was a service and upgrade rather than a fault chase: a full Console5 recap, a Unibios 4.0, the FirebrandX audio fixes that apply to this revision, and the 68 Ohm to 75 Ohm video resistor change. The VRAM was socketed preventatively while the board was open. Tested with Metal Slug X on a NEO SD Pro.

Console5 cap kit

Console5's NEO-AES 3-3 / 3-4 cap kit and audio fix kit, the kit for this board revision. It carries the parts for the audio fix as well as the 75 Ohm video resistors.

FirebrandX audio fix

FirebrandX's AES 3-3 and 3-4 audio fix. SNK left filter components off these two revisions, leaving a 60 cycle buzz on the audio output. The fix puts back the missing ceramics, adds a 470uF electrolytic across the JRC 2066D and swaps the polyester caps.

His AES 3-3 and 3-4 RGB bypass guide is where the 68 Ohm to 75 Ohm resistor change is explained, for sync that meets spec.

UniBIOS

Razoola's Universe BIOS, the replacement BIOS fitted here. Version 4.0 is free for personal use.

RAM chips and sockets

Two Sony SRAM types were socketed on this board. The video SRAM is the CXK5814P-35L, 2048 x 8 in a 24-pin DIP on 7.62mm row spacing, where the speed grade matters: it has to be 35ns or faster. The other is the CXK5864BSP-12L, 8192 x 8 at 120ns, 28-pin DIP on the same 7.62mm spacing. buyICnow carries both as used and tested stock, so availability comes and goes.

The video SRAM comes in pairs and is worth treating as a pair, since one failing tends to mean the other is not far behind.

Sockets that fit, both machined pin and both on 7.62mm row spacing: Mill-Max 110-93-324-41-001000 for the 24-pin chips and Mill-Max 110-93-328-41-001000 for the 28-pin ones. These are parts that fit rather than a record of what actually went in here, which is lost to time.

This is the first AES that I managed to win at auction, back in 2021, a couple of months after the Neo Geo CD. I eventually got around to work on it, performing a full recap and installing a Unibios 4.0, as well as performing the @FBXGargoyle fixes for this rev. #neogeo

Since this happened after I fixed the other AES unit with the sprite fault, when I installed the Unibios, I also socketed the VRAM. Which you can just about see it on the top of the first 2 pics and then on 3rd pic, just in case... You never know what the future holds in store.

Then I performed a full recap with a console5 cap kit, you can just about see in the first pic that the 68 Ohm resistors were changed out for 75 Ohm ones. Better view in 2nd pic.

In these pics you can see the FirebrandX fixes for the audio section, that apply to both this rev 3-4 and the unit which I fixed, which is 3-3. Including swapping the polyester caps, although that would be hard to spot in the pic as they look the same.

I wrapped up the work with a Metal Slug X test for validation, running off of my NEO SD Pro.
