Totoro toy with erratic motion

February 2, 20252 threads~1 min readSuccessful repair
Broken gear/tooth

A Totoro with missing gear teeth and no matching replacement in any kit I could source. Two gears cut, filed and glued into one that works. Totoro snores happily again.

I decided to open up the sleeping Totoro doll to find out why it was making a crunching noise when you trigger the belly up and belly down feature. Naturally, on an old toy like this, one of the gears has missing teeth. Waiting on a set of gears from AE to see if I can fix this.

Bought two kits of plastic gears on AliExpress, to fix a broken toy. I couldn't find a matching gear on those kits so, I tried to find two that I could glue together to match the original with some cutting and filing and glueing. 1st attempt was a bust but the 2nd one worked.

Now Totoro can snore away happily and rock Mei to sleep on his belly.
