Refurbished a pair of BOSS MA-12AV speakers for myself, then later did the same for a friend.
After some extensive cleaning, I think they came out quite alright. Not perfect and certainly not looking like new but, I'm happy with the result. There's a video below in the thread if you want to hear how they sound. #RETROGAMING #Sega #MegaDrive #StreetsOfRage
Hopefully compression won't make it too terrible.
1/2 Recapping my BOSS MA-12AV speakers. Found an interesting difference between them, C8 is 47uF 16V on one of them and 100uF 16V on the other. I don't think they had been touched before, all Sanyo caps on both units. Anyone know why? Test videos below. #RetroGaming #restoration
2/2 First video testing just one speaker, second video, second and third videos are stereo (Castlevania and Streets of Rage 2). #Castlevania #StreetsOfRage #Sega #MegaDrive
1/2 As expected, refurbishment efforts ensued. These things were dusty and in need of new caps. One of the units was chirping when powering off.
2/3 Replacing capacitor, reflowing solder, cleaning dust and grime. One of the units had the exquisite (🤮) smell of rotten fish. So some caps had definitely leaked.
3/3 Now there is no more chirping. Obligatory Streets of Rage testing. I'll finish cleaning the outside tomorrow.
I did end up giving them a final pass before they went to their forever home. Wiped them down with isopropyl and applied some aerospace 303 protectant. They were still wet when I took the pics, so they look kind of glossy. Once it dries they look better.
