NEC — PC Engine Super CD-ROM2
This one gave me a scare mid-recap when it lost the picture entirely. Turned out to be a resistor knocked off during SMD cap removal; found it sitting on the paper towel and put it back. Also gained a new transport gear and an RGB amp.
Super CD-ROM2 restoration started. Replaced transport gear and it can now read discs, a good start. 🙂 Still has some issues with sound, probably leaky caps, since the issues go away once it heats up. I guess a recap will be the next step. #RETROGAMING #PCEngine #Castlevania
So, out with the old and in with the new. Various leaky capacitors, several darkened through holes. A lot of solder flux and braid later, only 2 through-holes turned out to be hanging on by a thread. Surprisingly, none of the SMDs seemed to have leaked.
Well this was troubling... It was working previously. In spite of the sound issues.
After some head scratching, correcting an incorrectly fitted capacitor, it turned out that the major issue was... a missing resistor that had been knocked off, possibly when removing an SMD cap. Miraculously found it lying on the absorbent paper towels and reinstalled. It lives!
After keeping me up late, it is now a happy working unit with no broken gears and no sound issues. A great outcome, topped off with some #Castlevania Rond of Blood for good measure.
