A multi-stage restoration spread over several sessions. PSU, neck board and deflection board all had their turn. The solder on the back of these boards really does turn to dust.
Got some new gear from Japan today. A #Sony PVM-9045Q, a nice little joystick for my #MSX and #X6800 computers, Omega Boost for the #PlayStation 1, another MIDI adapter cable for the X6800 (hopefully this one will actually work) and lots of NOS floppy disks. #RETROGAMING #CRT
The usual CRT dust bunnies with a side of nicotine and tar. But does it work? #RETROGAMING #CRT #Sony
Why yes, yes it does. Playing streets of rage 2, using a Nomad, after giving it an initial cleaning with some isopropyl wipes and a dust blower. #RETROGAMING #SEGA #StreetsOfRage #BareKnuckle
(1/2) Recap of the PSU on a Sony PVM-9045Q, this monitor was working fine. Took the time to reflow the solder joints as most were very dull. Also did the same for the neck board. #CRT #restoration
(2/2) Finished off with some light cleaning all around and applied new dielectric grease on the anode cap. Tested with a PS1. #RETROGAMING #PlayStation
(1/4) On the bench today, not one but two lovely 9" Sony PVMs (9045QD and 9041Q). PSUs already recapped, so today is deflection day. Don't skip deflection day! First up, marking the usual suspects. #RETROGAMING #CRT #Sony #restoration
(2/4) Removed the marked caps and applied some white vinegar in the areas just to make sure any electrolyte leakage is addressed. Then I clean up with isopropyl alcohol, before proceeding with the recap. Should be easy, only 19 caps on each board.
(3/4) Lol! Who am I kidding? We all know the solder on the back of these things is turning to dust, so a fairly quick job turns into a "reflow all the things" epic.
(4/4) There we go all capacitors installed and marked with a dot. All joints on the back looking shiny and new. Now the question is... But do they work? Stay tuned, to find out. 😄 For now, other matters beckon but I will be back with some killer retro gaming screenshots. 🫡
(1/2) Thanks to @PigsyRetro here are some screenshots of the PVMs running Castlevania Symphony of the Night on the Mega Drive, after the deflection board recap. First up the 9045QD (450TVL). #RETROGAMING #Sony #Castlevania #SOTN #MegaDrive #Genesis #restoration
Next up the 9041Q (250TVL). Hopefully, Twitter won't compress the photos so much that you guys can't enjoy. I meant to have both monitors running at the same time but I didn't want to faff about looking for my Extron, while my SO is trying to put our kid to sleep, she's sick. 😞
I finally got some time to pop by my friend's house and pick up this 3D printed monitor stand for my 9" Sony PVMs. Thanks @BlueShell3D for publishing this model. If somebody knows of a version of this for Ikegami monitors, drop me the link please. I'd love one for those too.
