3DO Company — Panasonic FZ-1
The PSU repairs required bridging badly damaged traces, and a missed ceramic cap connection sent the console into a reboot loop. Sourcing a replacement laser meant buying a whole other console, but it runs now, and has since gained an ODE with SD card access through the AV expansion bay.
Panasonic #3DO FZ-1. This one was a doozy... Only managed to cross the finish line thanks to invaluable help from @A3rgan. On first boot console made a screeching noise trying to read a CD and the LEDs went dim. Close inspection of power area reveals culprits. #RETROGAMING
Lots of flux, braid and solder, tried to salvage as much as possible but the plating on one through hole was completely gone, another one partially gone. Managed to bridge the missing one to the trace but missed something else here. More on that later. Recapped the whole board.
Recapped the optical drive PCB too, for good measure.
Sadly when testing the console, pressing the power button made the console flash the power LED, like it was constantly being turned on and off in a loop. Troubleshooting with Simon revealed that I missed that a ceramic capacitor near C36 was also meant to connect to the trace.
Bridging that with a capacitor leg and voilà we have life again. Welcome to the Real world people! Alas, it was not a full win, as it appears the laser on the optical pickup is dead, no light when trying to read a CD. Could have been killed by the brown out episode. #RETROGAMING
I was finally able to fully repair my #Panasonic #3DO. All it took was buying a whole other console 🤡. Still way cheaper than an ODE. 😄 Got some #StreetFighter up and running to test out the console. Will also change to my S-video cable for better picture quality. #RETROGAMING
Console on console violence. 😬 I am sorry for this. I will at some point recap the second one (which powers on fine) and maybe try to sell it.
Now in S-video. Anybody else find it hilarious that controllers beyond P1 piggyback on each other? Thus allowing you to easily disconnect somebody else's controller. 👿imp #RETROGAMING #Panasonic #3DO #StreetFighter
I thought my 3DO didn't like backups, turns out it didn't like it on a Verbatim CD-R but it does on a Philips one. #RETROGAMING #3DO #RoadRash
As a weekend project I built myself two of these mini 3DO ODEs by @TZMWXdiyer, 1 for each of the 3DOs I own. #RETROGAMING #3DO
@TZMWXdiyer if you don't mind, I have three questions about the board. 1. The through-hole caps are listed as 220-470uF. Does this mean one of each or is any value in that range ok? 2. Where can I get the UF2 file? 3. Do I need a USB A plug or can I use an adapter from RPi port.
Today I finally got to test @TZMWXdiyer's 3DO ODE for the Panasonic FZ-1. It seems like both my boards are working. 😄 So here, have some pic of it and some shots of some games I tried out. #RETROGAMING #3DO
Obligatory shot of #DOOM for it's anniversary. Also featured, Gex, Street fighter II turbo and The need for speed. #StreetFighter #RETROGAMING #3DO #DOOM30 #doom30th
And now in their final form, with an integrated USB-A port.
1/3 @humblebazooka made a design to allow the SD card on a 3DO ODE to be accessed through the AV expansion port. My friend @nunofgs printed it for me to install on one of my consoles. Removed the shell from the extender and trimmed a bit off the top piece to clear the RF shield.
2/3 ODE courtesy of @TZMWXdiyer. I tried to route the ribbon cable as cleanly as possible and it's working fine.
3/3 Here are some shots of where it's located. Now I can conveniently add or remove games.
