Sony — BVM-D9H5J
Arrived allegedly dead. It just needed the right buttons pressed. The tube has 150,000 hours on it but doesn't look terrible. PSU partially recapped and a previous owner's poor rework job cleaned up, but the dimness issue remains unsolved for now.
(1/2) New arrivals from Japan via @SendicoOfficial. A bunch of light guns for #PlayStation and a fight stick. Some #Nintendo controllers for some mates. Finally, the cherry atop the cake, some 9" CRT monitors. #Sony and #Ikegami. #RETROGAMING #CRT
(2/2) Lovely 450TVL Ikegami TM10-17RA working fine and a "dead" Sony BVM-D9H5J, with a BKM-127W card. Wanted that so I can use S-video and composite on my BVM-D14H1E. The D9 powers on, the tube builds up static but there's no display. #RETROGAMING #CRT #Sony #BVM #Ikegami #Sega
As it turns out, what is dead may never die. It just needed someone to actually press the right buttons. Nothing wrong with it whatsoever. 150k hour tube, doesn't even seem terrible, maybe a lot of those were on standby. 🤷♂️ #RETROGAMING #Nintendo #Castlevania #CRT #Sony #BVM
Today, another monitor cleaned and greased. Unlike my other 9" Sony monitors, this one is much more robustly built, no brittle plastics here. Third pic has some aperture grille action and the last pic shows the built-in kickstand. #RETROGAMING #Nintendo #N64 #BVM #SuperMario
(1/2) Aperture grille vs shadow mask. Sony vs Ikegami. Which do you like best? #RETROGAMING #Nintendo #CRT
(2/2) Sleepy Mario is pondering on his choice of favourite type of CRT mask.
It's a very rainy Saturday morning here, so I figured I'd do some maintenance work on the D9's PSU. Replaced all but the 3 largest capacitors, as I don't have those in stock. Testing with some #Castlevania on the #Sega #MegaDrive #SegaGenesis #CRT #BVM #restoration
(1/2) No fix Sunday. Someone recapped this board. Sadly they used sticky flux and didn't like cleaning afterwards. Like a dummy I didn't take before pics. The soldering job was bad and an eyelet was missing on the leg of one cap. I reflowed the whole board #Sony #CRT #restoration
(2/2) Sadly this fixed nothing. The screen is still very dim and the text has a red hue when there is no video signal being fed to the BVM. When there's a signal it looks ok and OSD text is white but if you loop to another monitor the picture goes wonky.
